Watch the IRISS workshop on the application of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-design concept for materials and chemicals

In June 2022, the EU project IRISS was launched. The aim is to connect, synergize and transform the Safe-and-Sustainable-by-design community in Europe and globally towards a lifecycle approach, including a holistic integration of safety, climate neutrality, circularity, and functionality.

To ensure that materials are sustainable for humans and the environment, to increase recycling and use resources in a more efficient way, efforts are required from an early stage of design and manufacturing. This is the fundamental idea of the concept of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design, SSbD. The concept includes focusing early in the supply chain on providing products that are part of circular models, while avoiding properties that may be harmful to human health or the environment.

With this background, IRISS welcomed participants to its first digital workshop. The workshop started by presenting the EU commission’s vision and recommendations within the field of SSbD. An overview of mapping implementation of Safe by Design in chemicals and materials was presented by TEKNIKER, that also presented Tribology study and LCA methodology; the tools for Sustainability assessment at the design phase of products and processes.

Cefic and the six value chains – packaging, textiles, construction materials, automotive, energy materials and electronics – presented their perspectives on the challenges and obstacles within their value chains. They also gave recommendations on how to implement SSbD concept in the value chains.

The workshop is available online by following the link below and registering for the event. You will then receive a link to the webinar in an email.
