The revised SSbD Framework has been published

The revised framework introduces five novel aspects and is expected to play a key role in accelerating the transition towards safe and sustainable materials, products and processes.

The Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework for chemicals and materials was initially proposed by European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) in 2022, supporting European Commission Recommendation adopted the same year. Since then, the framework has been tested in a range of practical contexts and by different stakeholder groups. Based on these experiences, the JRC has now published a revised version of the SSbD framework.

Five main novel aspects of the revised framework

The revision introduces several important conceptual and structural updates. The five main novel aspects are:

  1. Introduction of SSbD fundamentals
  2. More structured scoping analysis
  3. Revised structure for safety and sustainable assessments parts is introduced.
  4. Evaluation of SSbD implementation
  5. New focus on documentation

Growing engagement in SSbD

The publication of the revised framework comes at a time of growing interest and engagement with SSbD across Europe and beyond. IRISS International SSbD Community continues to support more than 500 members from small and large companies, universities, and European clusters and other organisations in the transition to SSbD materials, products, and processes.
